Our
Dovedale Cottages are Grade 2 listed and have a cozy "Country
Living" feel in one of the most peaceful and tranquil
settings deep in the heart of the Peak District National Park,
with stunning scenery in all directions. These lovingly restored
cottages are situated in a truly unique position at the top
of Hall Dale in Stanshope and therefore are ideally positioned
for the Dovedale and Manifold Valleys. If you are looking
for first class accommodation, surrounded by peaceful/quiet
countryside then Church Farm is the place for you to get away
from the demands of modern living!
Church Farm has been a farm as far as we know since the 16th
century and has been in the Fowler family for half a century.
We have evidence of the occupation on the site of Church Farm
in much earlier times. It has always been farmed traditionally
in the old fashioned way of using very little pesticides and
fertilizers. Animals were allowed to spend their summers grazing
the meadows and pastures with the sun on their backs and a
friendly pat from the farmer who is boss. They had the very
best sweet smelling hay and silage to eat, and were allowed
to mature gradually as nature intended. The massive downturn
in farming has caused so many of the small farmers like ourselves
to either grow into large factory type units or to sell and
move out. We did not wish to lose our family home nor leave
our land and animals to be farmed more aggressively so we
made the decision to fully convert the farm to be organic
in April 1997 in an endeavour to protect and preserve the
environment and the animals and wildlife on the farm for the
future generations who should be lucky enough to live here.
Church Farm is therefore an organic farm (no fertilizers
or pesticides) with the fields containing a host of wild flowers
and herbs. Beautiful walks start from the doorstep of the
cottages. So, if you enjoy the countryside you cannot find
a better place to relax, unwind and explore it. At the end
of the day you have a lovely cottage to come back to and that
cozy open fire to laze in front of. If you can drag yourself
away, our local pub is just a short stroll.
This cottage originally formed part of our main farmhouse
which is Grade II listed, dating from around the 16th century
and was featured in the "Period Living and Traditional
Home" magazine.
The cottage is lovingly restored and beautifully converted
to a very high standard. It is full of character with many
original features of interest. As you enter the main hall
there is a stone flagged floor and beamed ceiling. To the
left is a fitted kitchen/dining room, also with a beamed ceiling,
a gritstone fireplace, window seat and a quarry-tiled floor.
Off the hall is the second bathroom with a shower cubicle,
hand basin and toilet. The L-shaped lounge has a full-beamed
ceiling and sandstone fireplace, inset with an old black range
for those cosy open fires. You will find many needlework pictures
done by Sue, and hand worked embroidery.
There are polished floorboards throughout, covered with richly
coloured rugs, which add considerably to the charm and tradition.
The main bedroom includes a double brass bed and wonderful
open views across the surrounding countryside. The second
bedroom has two good-sized 3'6" single beds. Both bedrooms
are decorated to a high standard. The main bathroom consists
of a bath, hand basin and toilet. The cottage has a secure
private cottage garden.
We provide duvets, linen and towels. The cottage has oil-fired
central heating and electricity - all included. There is a
cooker, fridge, a washer/drier, microwave, colour TV, cots
and high chair, garden furniture, external lighting, private
gardens and parking. We accept pets by arrangement.
