Hurdlow farm is situated in the south of the Peak District
National Park and we are part of a farming scheme called the
Environmentally Sensitive Area scheme, which we enter voluntarily
for a fixed term and it rewards us for using farming practices
which are environmentally friendly for the wildlife and landscape
in our area. It also provides help for conservation schemes
on farms which would not otherwise be possible.
The Farm itself carries a herd of Limousin, Hereford and
crossbred suckler cows providing good quality finished cattle
to a local butcher. The cows can be seen grazing during the
summer or (with supervision) in the cattle sheds on the holding
during the winter. They calve mostly in May and June with
plenty of new calves to see.
The farm animals are all covered by a scheme called 'farm
Assured British Beef and Lamb' which gives our customers the
confidence that they have been looked after, fed, watered
and treated to very high standards and we are inspected regularly
so our beef and lamb is as good as possible for consumers.
Also we have a flock of hill sheep, lambing in April, which
live on the hills surrounding the Mermaid Inn stretching up
from the farm to 1500ft above sea level at the top is the
infamous Mermaid pool.
The sheep are all home-bred and provide store and fat lambs
for the local market at Leek in the Autumn. During the summer
it is hectic for them with shearing, dipping, worming etc,
all done in the farm buildings where they can be seen gathered.
The Cottage
Hurdlow cottage has a 4 star rating and you enter firstly
into the hall with its grandfather clock ticking away, then
up two stone steps you will enter the spacious lounge with
a quite sensational view up the valley towards the moors.
There are beams and a open log fire, alongside which is a
log box filled free of charge so you can be warm and cosy
on those dark nights.
Through to the Kitchen where you will be greeted with a delicious
home made sponge cake made freshly for you. It is well equipped
with electric cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine and
all the everyday essentials. Through the old back door leads
you into the large walled garden for your own personal use,
complete with flagstone patio up three sandstone steps. At
the top of the stairs is the master bedroom with brass bed
and spacious proportions, to the right is the twin room with
views down the valley towards Tittesworth reservoir. The third
bedroom is also a double and is cosy and warm looking out
towards Ramshaw rocks and the heather moorland. The only bathroom
