Hartington
is one of the most highly regarded villages in the Peak, famous
for its geese pond, hall and fine old stone buildings. Its
popularity enables it to maintain two coaching inns, a tea-shop,
two grocers, newsagent, a renowned cheese shop (to which people
might travel for upto 40 miles to make purchases) and various
gift shops.
Primarily however its popularity lies in the fact that it
is a superb base for walking. The River Dove is only a few
hundred yards away and a very popular walk starts in the village,
just 80 yards from Knowl Cottage, over some lovely meadows
to the River, along the stretch known as Berefsford Dale,
which in turn leads onto Wolfscote Dale and the most famous
Dale of the Peak, Dovedale.
Cyclists are also extremely well served in the village. Sustrains
National Route 54 runs through the village before striking
out on some fairly easy nearby leisure lanes similar
to bridleways. The highly popular Tissington Trail, which
runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse
riders, and is just 1 mile from the cottages. Two further
trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail
(both of similar distance), are within 2 miles. These three
tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet
minor roads, which can be accessed at numerous points along
the trails.
Knowl Cottage (3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6)
A 5 Star historic cottage sleeping six persons in three bedrooms,
each bedroom having its on spacious en-suite, situated in
the picturesque market square of the highly regarded and superbly
located village of Hartington
This cottage is between 500 and 700 years old, it could therefore
have been built sometime in the 1300s. Part of the original
cruck beam can still be seen downstairs and a further part
is in fact featured upstairs. There are still plenty of further
old beams to be seen, although these further ones are not
as old as the cottage itself. The walls, in part well over
two feet thick, have a wonderful old cottage style feel about
them. There is a (large flat-screen) TV and DVD in the living
room of course, but also TVs in each bedroom. In addition
there is a wifi service and Sky TV with full range of programmes,
including Sky Sports and films package.
In the spacious lounge there is an impressive log burning
inglenook fireplace with open grate, bordered by dressed stone
lintels. There are also original stone mullion windows and
beams. Without doubt this is a most relaxing room. There is
a television, video and CD player, but who needs these - whether
in summer or winter, just sit in the leather settees and look
at your surroundings! The cottage is well heated with fully
controllable central heating in addition to this open fire
place. All heating is included in the rental. Unlimited logs,
kindling wood etc are supplied.
The kitchen has gloss work-tops and real granite sink, full
height fridge with good sized freezer compartment, micro-wave,
dish-washer and washing machine, adjacent to the open-plan
beamed dining room and is genuinely full equipped.
On the first floor are three large bedrooms, all en-suite,
two doubles and one twin. One en-suite (in an entirely separate
room off the bedroom) has bath with shower over, the others
(again one of them in an entirely separate room leading off
the twin bedroom) have genuinely spacious shower cubicles
with toilets and sinks.
Despite being in the heart of the village, once inside there
is a real feeling of seclusion and peace. To the front there
is a lovely cottage garden often photographed by passer-bys.
A number In front of this garden is off-road parking for two
larger/three smaller cars, with the option of further parking
on the road in front of the cottage, or if taken within yards.
The cottage has in the last 3 years achieved an almost unheard
of 100% in respect of cleaning standards in the official grading
process carried out by Enjoy enland.
There are ten (!) personalised highly organised information
folders, much praised, enabling guests to make the most of
their stay.
