Hartington
is one of the most highly regarded villages in the Peak, famous
for its geese pond, hall and fine old stone buildings. Its
popularity enables it to maintain two coaching inns, a tea-shop,
two grocers, newsagent, a renowned cheese shop (to which people
might travel for upto 40 miles to make purchases) and various
gift shops.
Primarily however its popularity lies in the fact that it
is a superb base for walking. The River Dove is only a few
hundred yards away and a very popular walk starts in the village,
just 80 yards from thel cottages, over some lovely meadows
to the River, along the stretch known as Berefsford Dale,
which in turn leads onto Wolfscote Dale and the most famous
Dale of the Peak, Dovedale.
Cyclists are also extremely well served in the village. Sustrains
National Route 54 runs through the village before striking
out on some fairly easy nearby leisure lanes similar
to bridleways. The highly popular Tissington Trail, which
runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse
riders, and is just 1 mile from the cottages. Two further
trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail
(both of similar distance), are within 2 miles. These three
tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet
minor roads, which can be accessed at numerous points along
the trails. In the courtyard there is a garage for storage
of bicycle.
Manifold and Dove Cottages (1 bedroom, sleeps 2/3)
These two stone self-catering self contained cottages located
around our private courtyard in the picturesque market square
of the highly regarded and superbly located Peak District
village of Hartington, Derbyshire.
The cottages have been converted from an old stone barn and
following upgrading, now exude a modern ambience internally,
despite the works having exposed further character features,
including of course various original beams.
Both holiday cottages have been graded in the top half of
four star, and in the last 3 years consistently achieved an
almost unheard of 100% in respect of cleaning standards in
the official grading process carried out by Enjoy England.
The cottages have fully controllable central heating throughout,
backed up by coal effect stoves in the living areas, primarily
to give extra atmosphere. In these living areas are one leather
settee and one leather chairs in each cottage. The modern
kitchens are undoubtedly fully equipped, ahd have gloss work-tops
and real granite sinks, fridge-freezers, micro-wave, ceramic
topped electric cookers (far more controllable for cooking
than traditional electric cookers). Both cottages have double
beds, but one of them, Manifold Cottage can have a single
bed added to the double bed, giving the option of sleeping
three in a room or alternatively, using as two singles. Throughout
the two cottages there are plenty of original old beams and
other interesting features. The overall floor space of the
two cottages is roughly the same.
Each cottage has two TVs, one in the bedroom and one in the
living room, the latter in both cottages having full sky programmes
(so including sky sports and films packages). They also receive
a wifi signal.
Being in a courtyard, they are exceptionally quiet. There
is provision for parking of one car per cottage in the courtyard,
but generally plenty of opportunities for parking in the market
square in the village (no charges)
On the far side of our courtyard is a fully equipped laundry
room,
In each cottage there are ten (!) personalised highly organised
information folders, much praised, enabling guests to make
the most of their stay.
