Whim Farm (5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 10 in two cottages)

The Whim Farm was last a working farm during the 1950’s. The conversion of the building to holiday accommodation was completed in 2002. The arched windows, beams and other character features have been left in place but it is now unimaginable that End Shippon Cottage used to house 10 cattle and Cart horse Cottage, as the name suggests, was where the working horses for the farm were stabled. The cattle would stand in stalls, two to a bay, tied by the neck and the cobbled farm house yard that the kitchen windows look out upon originally was the midden – muck heap! The only thing to remind you of its origins are now the animals that look over the garden wall.

The Whim - comes from the fact that this was a mining area - lead mining was carried out in the fields. A Whim was another name for the winding mechanism at the top of the mine shafts that was used to pull up and lower items into the shaft. At Magpie mine at Sheldon (approx 3 miles away) an old derelict mine can still be seen. As with most mines in the area the surface gear has long since been cleared away and the mine shafts capped for safety. Copses of trees have been planted on and around the shaft areas to stop any building there. The Ash tree was the tree mainly used for that purpose in this area- hence the name Monyash.
