Winner of the prestigious National Railway Heritage Award
for Conservation 2009 and featured in the BBC's series of
the "Great
British Railway Journeys" by Michael Portillo as
he follows George Bradshaw's Victorian Railway Guidebook.
Set
in a conservation area just outside of the village of Cromford
a Grade II listed building, built in 1860 this highly individual
former railway Waiting Room has been turned into a delightful
holiday cottage. Left derelict since the 1960's many of the
lost architectural features, including the clock, roof finials
as well as the magnificent chimney stacks have all been restored
during the last 12 months (2008) into a luxuriously appointed
holiday accommodation.
Ideally placed for walking, cycling and touring the beautiful
Derbyshire countryside or for those interested in railway
history or architecture. The local amenities are excellent
with everyday shopping in the village; including, Arkwright's
general store, the famous Robinson's Fish & Chip shop,
three public houses, a newsagent, Post Office, Pharmacy, Off-Licence
and much more.
Accommodation (1 bedroom, sleeps 2)
This beautiful solid stone building is immaculately presented
and homely with under floor heating throughout. It has a double
bedroom and a double sofa bed in the living room which can
be made available for two additional guests (sleeping 4 in
total) if necessary. All of the original internal features
have been retained and restored, these include vaulted ceilings,
cast iron diamond pattern windows, an open stone fireplace
in the living room with a wood burning stove for cosy all
year round comfort which creates a welcoming and cosy retreat
all year round.
The main entrance door opens into a porch area, suitable
for the storage of bicycles, walking boots, coats etc. A spacious
open plan kitchen, dining and living room with vaulted ceiling.
The kitchen which is brand new, contains a washing machine
and drier, dishwasher, double oven, hob and extractor. There
is also a convenient breakfast bar. The living room contains
a spacious three seater sofa and two comfortable arm chairs
as well as a hi-fi and TV with DVD player.
The bedroom which also has a vaulted ceiling contains a quality
double bed, two bedside cabinets, a dressing table and wardrobe.
A luxuriously appointed bathroom and contains a spacious wet
room with a large heated towel rail.
Car Parking and Access
Cromford railway station contains a public car park where
guests may park free of charge. If at any time the car park
does become completely full, the owners have two dedicated
parking spaces that can be made available.
Because of access, we would not recommend the cottage to
anybody with mobility problems or young children. Customers
should be assured that the railway service should not disturb
them, as the trains on the other side of the line only consist
of two carriages which are fairly quiet, only remain in the
station for a couple of minutes and do not run during the
night.
