The 200 yr old stone cottage faces south over Bradford Dale
in Youlgrave, one of the Peaks most friendly and interesting
villages. It is situated on Bankside down a cobbled path which
leads to the river .The owners have had the cottage for 18
years and have completely renovated it in 2009, with new doors
and windows and a new bathroom with underfloor heating.
The garden has superb views across the valley to the sheep-dotted
hills beyond. The Dale houses a multitude of wildlife - water
voles, kingfishers, dippers, winter wagtails and all sorts
of ducks. A walk in one direction leads you to Middleton-by-Youlgrave,
while in the other direction, you can take an evening stroll
down to Alport, returning via a Youlgrave pub for an evening
drink or meal. The children might like a walk to Robin Hoods
Stride where they can clamber over the huge boulders.
The village is lively with all sorts of events happening
throughout the year from music and art festivals to pantomime,
theatre and the cinema club. Youlgrave has 5 well dressings
which are up at midsummer. Bakewell and Matlock are the nearest
towns for shopping, although the villages' two shops have
a good variety of locally produced food.
Accommodation (2 bed, sleeps 4)
The accommodation is comfortable and spacious. In the winter,
there's an open fire, storage and electric heating for a cosy
evening after a bracing walk. In the summer, the decking is
a superb place for lazy lunches and BBQs, overlooking Bradford
Dale as the sun goes down.
All comforts are catered for including games and books for
children and adults, a telephone, Wifi (small extra cost),
flat screen TV, stereo and Ipod dock and a piano.
The kitchen is modern with an electric fan oven and hob,
microwave and fridge. Upstairs, there are two rooms, one with
a kingsized bed and a little room with a small double bed.
Linen and towels are provided. The bathroom has bath, power
shower, loo and basin, and underfloor heating.
Outside, there is a coal and log shed and an outhouse for
the washing machine, tumble dryer and garden furniture - recliners,
parasol, table and BBQ.
Because of its location down a steep cobbled path, the cottage
is not likely to be suitable for those with mobility problems.
