Location

If you start from Ilam it is Just 4 miles north-west of Ashborne.

Description

Dovedale is certainly the most visited area of the white peaks. The river, which is famous for trout fishing, runs through a narrow limestone gorge leaving a number of unusual rock formations.

The stepping stones have become very polished over the years and have awkward angles making crossing them difficult for the less agile. Some take great delight just sitting watching with expectation of seeing someone get their feet wet. Just behind the stepping stones is Thorpe Cloud (cloud means a rock or hill) which is 290m high and has some interesting fossil shells at the top.

The path along side the Dove provides a picturesque route through the lime stone valley. It is a good stone surface but there are a coupe of hills to navigate so it is not suitable for wheel chairs or push-bikes. However, if you can overcome these obstacles it is well worth the effort. You will see some interesting rock formations including views from Lovers Leap to the Lions Head, Tissington Spires, Dove Holes as well as some interesting plant life all to the relaxing sound of water dancing over weirs. It is clear to see why it is such a popular place.

It is about three miles to Mill Dale where there is a shop for refreshments and public toilets. Further upstream is Beresford Dale was a favourite location for Izaak Walton author of 'The Compleat Angler'.
