| Location
Just 5 miles north west of Ashborne on the river Manifold
but providing an ideal starting point from which to explore
the river Dove. The famous Dovedale Stepping Stones are just
about a mile away.

Description
When you arrive in Ilam it appears as though there is not
a great deal to see apart from its unusual architecture and
magnificent setting. However, when you look closer you will
discover the delights of the National Trust's Country Park.
Unfortunately the village is marred by a hugh coach garage
which sits between the picturesque buildings (you can just
see the back end of a bus in the second photograph). How they
managed to get planning consent to construct this monstrosity
I'll never know.
The village was built in the 19th century by Jesse Watts-Russell
who also built the stately home (Ilam hall which is now a
Youth Hostel). There is also an unusual gothic cross erected
as a memorial to Jesse's wife close to the bridge over the
Manifold River.
The church dates form the 13th century but it was restored
in the mid 1800's. Apparently, if you are ill and crawl through
the holes in the walls of St Bertram's shrine you will be
cured!
