Description
Longnor was once a thriving market town and has its roots
in the days of the Saxon Kings of Mercia around 700AD. Surprisingly
it is not mentioned in the Doomsday Book, history suggests
that the village was burnt to the ground in the reign of William
II as punishment for poaching deer in Leek Forest. The first
written reference to Longnor village can be found in the records
of St Batholomew's Church in 1223 on the current church site.
Longnor was one of the locations used for the filming of
Peak Practice. It is also know for it's well dressing and
race meeting which takes place in early September.
Longnor has wonderful views with some interesting pubs (e.g.
Horse Shoe and Cheshire Cheese) a Craft Centre which serves
food and refreshments and the Red Bull Art Gallery.
