The Mainfold at Wetton

View up Wetton Hill

Thors Cave

Woodland Scenery

Location

The Manifold Way runs from Hulme End to Waterhouses and passes through the valleys of the river Manifold and Hamps. Waterhouse is about 8 miles from Ashbourne via the A523.

Description

The Manifold Way follows the route of a disused railway line (Leek and Manifold Light Railway) so it is flat and runs along side the picturesque Manifold and Hamps rivers. It is eight miles long at the bottom of a stunning limestone valley and ideal for walking and cycling. There are some interesting rock formations with the most notable being Thors Cave. It is quite wooded so it is ideal for a sheltered walk on a sunny day. There is also evidence of past copper mining at Ecton. We cycled from Hulme End through Ecton to Wetton which is about half way along the route. Further south the trail leaves the Mainfold and follows the river Hamps to Waterhouses.
